About Physiotherapy
Definitely! Physiotherapy can help prevent injuries, enhance physical fitness, and maximize athletic performance. It’s a tool for your overall wellness journey, not just a solution for injuries.
Alberta’s physiotherapists are primary care providers, so you can see a private physiotherapist without a referral. While some insurance providers may require a referral, most don’t. Physiotherapists are skilled health professionals who can assess your condition independently. However, checking your specific insurance plan is always a good idea.
Physiotherapy is a health profession that helps people recover from injury, reduce pain and stiffness, increase mobility, and improve overall well-being. Physiotherapists use a holistic approach to treatment, consider the lifestyle of a client, their unique challenges and goals.
The cost of physiotherapy can depend on various things, like how severe your condition is and how long your treatment needs to be. Many insurance plans cover physiotherapy. It’s also worth considering the long-term benefits to your health and mobility.
Physiotherapy is incredibly versatile and can help manage and improve various conditions – from chronic diseases, post-surgery recovery, and injuries to general physical wellness. However, the effectiveness can vary depending on your situation and health history. A consultation with a physiotherapist will provide you with a personalized treatment plan tailored to your particular needs.
Many insurance plans include physiotherapy coverage, but you should verify this with your provider. Even if it’s not covered, remember that physiotherapy is an investment in preventing bigger health issues in the future.
On your first visit, you will undergo a thorough assessment of your condition and a personalized treatment plan will be developed for you. Your physiotherapist will also answer any questions and address any concerns you might have. It’s a collaborative process.
There may be some discomfort if you’re recovering from surgery or an injury, but physiotherapy should not cause severe pain. Your physiotherapist will always work within your comfort levels and can adjust your treatment plan as needed.
When you choose a physiotherapist, you’re choosing a highly trained professional, committed to their field, regulated by a rigorous professional body, and constantly striving to provide the best possible care for their patients
To practice as a physiotherapist in Alberta, individuals must complete a rigorous professional education and certification journey. For more info on physiotherapist qualifications, please visit About Physiotherapy.
Physiotherapy is a safe treatment modality overseen by regulatory bodies. Physiotherapists use evidence-based techniques and adjust treatment plans to suit individual patient needs and conditions.
The timeline for improvement can vary widely, depending on the specific condition, severity, and individual factors. Your physiotherapist can give you an idea of the expected timeline based on your initial assessment and ongoing progress.
Physiotherapy can have mental health benefits, particularly when it comes to managing stress and anxiety. Techniques like mindfulness, deep breathing, and yoga, which many physiotherapists incorporate into their treatment plans, can help manage mental health.

If you have a concern about a physiotherapist and have yet to resolve the issue by speaking with them or their supervisor, you can submit a complaint through the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta. All complaints are reviewed and investigated per the college’s professional conduct process.
About Alberta Association of Physiotherapy (AAP) and the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta (CPTA)
The Government of Alberta’s Health Provisions Act, Bill 46, mandated the AAP’s separation from the CPTA. This legislation required regulatory colleges to separate from associations and unions to ensure they prioritize patients and the public interest. The AAP was formed as a result, allowing it to focus on supporting and advocating for its members.
The separation allows the AAP to work solely in the best interest of its members, providing advocacy, professional development opportunities, and resources such as a job board, marketplace and the ‘Find a Physio’ directory (launching soon!). This eliminates potential conflicts of interest and allows the AAP to focus entirely on supporting its members.
The CPTA is the governing body for physiotherapists in Alberta. Their mission is to safeguard and serve the public interest through effective regulation of the practice of physiotherapists in Alberta.
The AAP focuses on the needs of physiotherapists in Alberta. We are committed to offering professional development opportunities and supporting our members throughout their careers, in addition to advocating for the profession on a provincial level, and providing resources tailored to our members.
Moving forward, the AAP will continue working closely with the CPTA to support the physiotherapy profession in Alberta and across Canada. As a member, you can look forward to more exciting developments, greater support, and an even stronger physiotherapy community.

The Alberta Association of Physiotherapy (AAP) and the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) are separate entities, each with distinct mandates and membership fees.
The AAP operates at a provincial level, focusing specifically on the needs and advocacy of Alberta’s physiotherapists, while the CPA represents the profession across Canada. Our collaboration is strong, but our memberships are distinct.
The AAP’s role is to support Alberta’s physiotherapists through professional development, community connections, and dedicated advocacy. Meanwhile, the CPA works to enhance the profession nationally, offering resources and representation for over 16,000 members including physiotherapists, assistants, and students across Canada.
This separation means that membership fees for AAP and CPA are independent of each other. However, this also allows each organization to concentrate on its specific scope and provide targeted benefits. For AAP members, this includes access to specialized local resources and opportunities to shape the profession in Alberta.
Joining AAP is an investment in your professional growth, akin to educational fees, but on a much smaller scale with potentially significant benefits for your career. It’s an opportunity to be part of a provincial community that’s closely connected to national developments, ensuring comprehensive support for your practice.
For any questions or further information about this partnership, please contact info@albertaphysio.com or information@physiotherapy.ca. We’re excited to work together for the betterment of physiotherapy in Alberta and across Canada, as we are indeed stronger together.
