ARBI is seeking a licensed Physiotherapist (PT) to supervise a Provisional Physiotherapist (PPT) under a structured supervision plan aligned with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta guidelines. This contract role ensures client-centered, high-quality, and safe physiotherapy service delivery while evaluating and developing the supervisee’s clinical competence.
The PT Supervisor is accountable for providing consistent, appropriate, and ethically sound supervision, tailored to the Provisional Physiotherapist’s skills and client care needs. The position begins with hands-on engagement in client assessment and transitions to oversight and evaluation as competence develops.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
DIRECT ENGAGEMENT
• Lead clinical assessments and client care interactions
• Allow the Provisional Physiotherapist to observe and take notes on client treatment planning and delivery.
• Establish the baseline for the Provisional PT’s skillset and readiness for delegated tasks.
GUIDED EXECUTION
• Observe the Provisional Physiotherapist as they lead client care sessions
• Provide immediate feedback and guidance on clinical decisions, interventions, and documentation
• Adjust tasks and level of supervision based on observed competency
EVALUATIVE/PROGRESSIVE PHASE
• Supervision scope to be defined based on the Provisional PT’s performance
• May include a mix of direct, indirect, and remote supervision (E.g., chart audits, case reviews, virtual observations)
• Finalize a supervision plan based on ongoing risk assessment and client care needs
CORE DUTIES
• Evaluate the Provisional Physiotherapist’s competence before assigning clinical duties
• Develop, implement, and adapt a supervision plan that includes methods such as direct observation, chart audits, chart-stimulated recall, and case-based discussions.
• Ensure appropriate supervision methods are matched to the Provisional PT’s capabilities and patient complexity.
• Review client documentation and progress regularly to ensure regulatory compliance and care quality.
• Maintain clear documentation of the supervision plan, client consent, and supervision activities.
• Intervene as needed in any case of potential risk to patient safety or deviations from the care plan.
• Maintain open, honest, and respectful communication with the Provisional Physiotherapist.
• Serve as the point of accountability for delegated tasks and patient care oversight.
• Provide final evaluation and recommendations on the Provisional PT’s readiness for independent practice or further supervision.
• Active registration in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta (General Register).
• At least 2 years of relevant clinical experience in physiotherapy practice.
• Previous experience in supervision or mentorship preferred.
• Strong understanding of professional standards, including documentation, ethical care, and client safety.
• Exceptional communication, evaluation, and coaching skills.
• Ability to provide in-person and remote supervision where appropriate.
• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to manage clinical oversight effectively within limited time allocation.
