Student Success and Experience (formerly Office of the Dean of Students) holds student support at the heart of everything we do. We provide services focused on student well-being and flourishing both in the classroom and beyond. We offer a wide range of services, including career guidance, health and wellness resources, academic support, and assistance for students facing unexpected challenges or personal difficulties. This position has a term length from August 17, 2026 to March 26, 2027.
Location – This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, South Campus, and Campus Saint-Jean, Edmonton.
Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics provides a comprehensive athletics program worthy of one of Canada’s leading research-intensive universities. The Varsity Health team plays a critical role in the student-athlete experience by providing integrated healthcare services that support athlete well-being, performance, and long-term success. Working alongside coaches, physicians, strength and conditioning staff, and other health professionals, Varsity Health helps student-athletes safely train, compete, and thrive throughout their university careers.
Athletics is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Certified Athletic Therapist or Physiotherapist to join a dynamic high-performance sport environment. This role offers the opportunity to work directly with varsity student-athletes, providing comprehensive injury prevention, emergency response, clinical assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play services across a diverse range of sports.
Reporting to the Manager, Student-Athlete Services, the Varsity Therapist is responsible for delivering front-line clinical care in both sport and clinic settings while exercising independent clinical judgment and contributing to a multidisciplinary approach to athlete health. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting athlete safety, performance, and overall wellness while contributing to the continued success of Golden Bears and Pandas Athletics.
In addition to providing direct clinical services, the Varsity Therapist contributes to injury prevention initiatives, athlete education, integrated care planning, student mentorship, and the ongoing development of Varsity Health services. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student-athletes while working within one of Canada’s premier university athletics programs.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive injury care and rehabilitation services for varsity student-athletes, including injury assessment, treatment planning, therapeutic interventions, and return-to-play management.
Deliver on-field and event medical coverage at practices, competitions, and special events while responding to emergencies and implementing injury prevention and risk management strategies.
Coordinate athlete healthcare and case management by working with physicians, diagnostic imaging providers, and allied health professionals to ensure timely, integrated care and optimal recovery outcomes.
Collaborate with coaches, performance staff, and health professionals to support athlete wellness, performance, and safe participation in a high-performance sport environment.
Contribute to the Varsity Health program and student development through clinical documentation, mentorship of practicum students, and participation in initiatives that enhance athlete care and service delivery.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Athletic Therapy, Physiotherapy, Kinesiology, or a related health discipline required; Master’s degree is considered an asset.
Certified Athletic Therapist (CAT(C)) or Registered Physiotherapist eligible for registration and licensure in Alberta, with current professional liability insurance.
Current First Responder certification and Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR certification required.
Demonstrated knowledge of sport injury assessment, rehabilitation, return-to-play protocols, and injury prevention strategies in a high-performance sport environment.
Strong clinical reasoning, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team while maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.
Experience providing medical coverage for competitive sport programs, particularly within university, collegiate, or high-performance athletics, is considered an asset.
Familiarity with the Canadian university sport system, including U SPORTS competition environments and athlete support models, is considered an asset.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel as required to support varsity training and competition schedules.
